Dr. Joanne Weber

Biography

Joanne Weber is an Associate Professor in the Department of Educational Psychology at the University of Alberta, focused on deaf education and bilingual education. She holds a Canada Research Chair and has extensively published works including poetry and creative non-fiction, garnering accolades such as the Governor General Academic Gold Medal. Her research interests include language literacy education, applied linguistics, arts-based education, and sign language studies. Joanne is actively engaged in numerous research projects aimed at advancing deaf education, including the development of alternative approaches in reviewing programs for Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) students. She leads initiatives that leverage arts-based methodologies in educational settings, emphasizing the importance of culturally relevant curriculums. Additionally, she serves the deaf community at both provincial and national levels and has been a key figure in promoting opportunities for deaf actors and fostering connections between hearing and deaf communities. Joanne teaches various courses on inclusive education and American Sign Language, maintaining a commitment to enhancing educational practices for students with diverse needs.
