Dr. Joyce Epstein

Biography

Joyce L. Epstein is a Professor and Co-Director of the Center for School, Family, and Community Partnerships at Johns Hopkins University's School of Education. She established the National Network of Partnership Schools (NNPS) in 1995, conducting extensive research and providing professional development for school and district leaders. Her work emphasizes developing research-based programs that foster family and community engagement in education. She has published over one hundred fifty works, including textbooks such as 'School, Family, Community Partnerships: Handbook for Action' (4th Edition, 2019) and 'Preparing Educators for Improving Schools' (3rd Edition, 2023). In 1991, Dr. Epstein and the late Don Davies founded the International Network of Scholars for School, Family, and Community Partnerships, which facilitates an annual meeting for researchers from various countries to share studies on family and community engagement. Elected as a Fellow of the American Educational Research Association in 2009, she received the Elizabeth Cohen Distinguished Career Award for her significant contributions to applied sociology in education. Dr. Epstein's research interests lie at the intersections of research, policy, and practice in education, focusing on family involvement, education policy, K-12 education, and academic performance.
