Biography

Joyce Mgombelo is an Associate Professor in Mathematics Education at Brock University, Ontario, Canada. Her research program focuses on mathematics cognition, identity, and ethics-based principles in human cognition. She develops theoretical perspectives from enactivism, complexity science, and psychoanalysis. Recently, her work includes several SSHRC funded collaborative research projects, such as "Educating 21st Century: post-secondary students learning ‘progmatics’ (computer programming mathematical investigation, simulation, real-world modeling)" and "Advancing research methodology mathematics education collective learning systems." Additionally, she has contributed to the Capacity Development mathematics teaching project in rural remote communities in Tanzania. Dr. Mgombelo's interests also encompass teacher education, curriculum issues related to culture and cognition, qualitative research methodologies, complexity science, and enactivist pedagogy.
