Dr. Marilyn Abbott

Biography

Marilyn Abbott is a Professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Alberta, specializing in Educational Psychology with a focus on English language learners. Her extensive career encompasses roles as a practitioner, teacher-educator, and researcher in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL). She has developed and taught graduate-level TESL research methods courses and has supervised numerous graduate students. As a principal co-investigator on several major research grants, she has contributed significantly to studies funded by federal bodies in Canada and the United States. Her research primarily explores self-regulated learning strategies, technology-enhanced language learning, and literacy development for learners with interrupted formal education. She is dedicated to finding effective ways to support teachers in improving their instructional approaches and assessment practices for English language learners.
