Nathan Castillo is an international education development scholar with expertise in learning assessment, program evaluation, and educational technologies. He has extensive experience as a development practitioner on education, health, and economic development projects in Central and South America, as well as Sub-Saharan Africa. He has led program evaluation efforts in South Africa, Guatemala, and the Dominican Republic. Nathan completed service in Guatemala with the United States Peace Corps. He received his Master’s degree from Harvard University and his PhD from the University of Pennsylvania. His postdoctoral research focused on education at UNESCO. Nathan has served as an advisor to UNICEF, the Inter-American Development Bank, USAID, and various international non-governmental organizations. His recent multi-year study in South Africa applies language-centered technology to support early grade reading in rural classrooms. In 2014, he was a recipient of the UNESCO Confucius Prize for Literacy.
