Dr. Valia Spiliotopoulos

Biography

Valia Spiliotopoulos is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Language and Literacy Education at the University of British Columbia (UBC), focusing on Teacher Education and Language & Literacy Education. With a robust educational background, she holds a B.A. and B.Ed. from UBC, an M.A. from Laval University, and a PhD from UBC. Valia's research explores content-based language learning approaches, language assessment, and the impact of language policy on bi/multilingual academic success. She has significant experience in program development and teaching methodology for both French and English, as well as leading projects in learning assessment and curriculum redesign. Previously, she served as an Associate Professor at Simon Fraser University, where she held various leadership roles, including Coordinator of the graduate in-service teacher education program. Valia has also worked at the University of Victoria and the University of Toronto, contributing to English language teaching and support. Her research interests include Academic Writing, Assessment, Content Language-Integrated Learning, Educational Technology, and Higher Education.
