Biography

Deniz Ortactepe Hart joined the University of Glasgow in September 2022 as a Lecturer in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). For the past 12 years, she has worked in Turkey, the United States, and the UK, focusing on training teachers in English as well as Spanish, French, Chinese, and Arabic. Her research interests primarily encompass social justice in language education, which includes teaching languages with a focus on diversity, equity, inclusion, and social transformation. Between 2018 and 2022, she led the Social Justice ELT project in Turkey, which involved organizing symposiums on Social Justice Language Education. Additionally, she collaborated with the Migrant Education Office of the California Department of Education to develop culturally sustaining pedagogies for farmworker children in Monterey County, California. She has authored a book titled 'Social Justice Language Classroom: Resource Book for Reflection, Action, Transformation,' published by Edinburgh University Press in 2023, and is currently co-editing an edited volume on Language Justice. Ortactepe Hart is also involved in supervising students researching areas like social justice language education, intersectionality, and environmental justice.
